Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) is an evidenced-informed model developed by the Residential Child Care Project at Cornell University. Developed alongside CARE (Children and Residential Experiences), TCI is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to support young people to learn constructive new ways to handle crisis and to regulate stressful feelings, frustrations or anger.
This exciting three or 4 (3 or 4) day training provides an opportunity for participants to engage in skills-based learning activities. Through reflective practice and group-based discussions, participants will take part in in scenario based learning and simulated exercises and activities.
Learning Objectives
On completion of this training, the expected outcomes for participants are to develop the effective knowledge and skills to:
- Prevent and de-escalate crisis with children and young people
- Safely and therapeutically managing crisis situations
- Be able to process with children and young people to improve their coping strategies
- Reduce potential and actual injury to children and staff
Prerequisites
To gain the most from TCI and equip you on your journey in providing positive support for children and young people, we ask you to:
- Complete the pre-reading in preparation for your learning journey.
- Have a discussion with your supervisor on how they can support you with your usual workload, to allow you to be present and actively engage in the full 3 or 4 days.
TCI includes protective interventions which are strategies designed to deflect a blow or release from a hold or grab. There are important safety caveats you need to consider:
- Participate only if physically or medically able – please speak with the Professional Learning Team prior to the training to discuss your individual circumstances.
- When attending training: talk to the facilitator if you are unsure of your ability to participate in the protective interventions or have any concerns.
Things to bring
Please ensure you attend sessions appropriately dressed, with closed flat shoes and comfortable loose clothing.
A small Morning Tea & Afternoon Tea will be provided. Please bring your lunch with you a, fridge will be provided to store your meal and hot water facilities are available. Some venues will have microwaves, please check with your manager, trainer or local admin as to what facilities are available
